Château Mouton Rothschild

Un magnum Château Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac, 2000

A word about the estate

Château Mouton Rothschild is famous for combining ‘art and wine’ through collaborations with the world's greatest artists, making each vintage a unique work of art.

The estate covers 91 hectares of vines. The grape varieties are typical of the Médoc: Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), Cabernet Franc (3%), Merlot (18%) and Petit Verdot (1%). An unusual vinification method is used, leaving the wine in vats after fermentation. This method gives the wine extra body, and distinguishes Rothschild wines by their great maturity.

In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton in Pauillac and renamed it Mouton Rothschild.

A word about the signature

In 1924, Philippe broke new ground with his first artistic collaboration on the label with Jean Carlu (1900-1997), but the idea never really took off.

In 1945, he celebrated the victory of the war by marking his labels with a ‘V’ designed by the artist Philippe Jullian (1919-1977). This collaboration marked the beginning of annual labels, which became the estate's visual signature.

The ram, Mouton Rothschild's emblem, evokes strength and nobility, in keeping with the estate's name and the values of excellence it embodies.
