Royal and Military Order of St. Louis - RARE CROSS of the Ol - Lot 159
Royal and Military Order of St. Louis - RARE CROSS of the Old Regime: Cross without ribbon, with four golden branches ending in double buttoned points (with balls), edged with a band of white enamel on the obverse and the reverse. Slight chips in the enamel on the obverse and missing on two arms on the reverse. Four fleurs-de-lys are interspersed between the branches. A trophy of leaves between the tips of the high branch allows the ribbon ring to pass through. The center of the obverse represents King St. Louis, while being a reminder to King Louis XIV, creator of the order, with the incripstion "LUD. M. INST. 1693" (Ludovicus Magnus Instituit 1693 - the year the order was created) is missing from the blue enamel. Center of the reverse side with the laurel wreath and sword, inscription "BELL. VIRTUTIS. PRAEM" (Bellicae Virtutis praemium). Lacks in the four enamel colours (blue, green, red and white). The markings of the centre "LUD. M. INST. 1693" and "BELL. VIRTUTIS PRAEM" make it possible to date this cross from the period of the Old Regime and before 1788, the year in which the buttons (balls) were removed. On January 1, 1791, the order is suppressed as such and becomes on this date "military order" before disappearing in 1793. (The markings of the order under the restoration will be "LUD. MAG. INST 1693" and "BELLICAE VIRTUTIS PRAEMIUM").
