OUTIN Pierre (1840-1899) - Lot 367
OUTIN Pierre (1840-1899) "King Louis XI threatened by a young peasant Oil on canvas Signed lower right, exhibition labels (Cherbourg n° 100 and Paris n° 87) on the back of the frame H 70 x W 108 cm - missing frame Expertise Cabinet Chanoit We see three characters. The one on the right is King Louis XI disguised as a merchant in order to better understand the society of the Kingdom of France. Next to him is his bodyguard who is about to draw his sword. The King signals him to refrain. A little to the side we see a young man who threatens them with his fist. He had asked them if it was safe to cross the river at this point. The two remained silent, and the young man interpreted this as a favorable response. So he took to the water and almost drowned while crossing the river. Having nevertheless managed to reach the other side, he violently confronted them. King Louis XI is remembered for his negotiating skills. It appears that the story depicted in this painting is historically true: The King managed to calm the young man down and even invited him to his Court to offer him a job.
