SEINE LEAD - Lot 129
SEINE LEAD Two cast lead figurines depicting a cleric carrying a monstrance and a soldier holding a saber. 19th century Heights: 16 cm and 18 cm Worn This type of figure, known as "Seine lead", is a series of figurines said to have been found during dredging of the Seine at the end of the 19th century. These ex-voto figures are said to have been thrown into the river by pilgrims making a wish. Their authenticity was questioned at the time of their discovery, but they acquired a certain notoriety thanks to André Breton and other surrealists who collected them. Appraisal by Mr. Benoit BERTRAND
