BENOIT (Louis), BENOIT (Arthur) - Études historiques sur le - Lot 253
BENOIT (Louis), BENOIT (Arthur) - Études historiques sur le Westrich. Le Livre du vingtième Jour. 1599-1726. Manuscript copy and studies. S.d. (circa 1850-1860); 2 volumes in-folio, 488 + 116 pp. + 23 ff, heterogeneous bindings: contemporary red half-chagrin, smooth spine (volume on the Westrich); contemporary brown half-basane, smooth spine with label, titled upper board (volume on the Livre du XXe jour). Important collections of Louis Benoit's handwritten working notes on the Westrich and the Livre du XXe jour. Louis Benoit's research, in which his brother Arthur appears to have participated, led to the publication in 1866 of a short volume entitled "Étude sur les institutions communales du Westrich et sur le Livre du vingtième jour de Fénétrange". The two handwritten compilations, far more copious than the printed volume, include archive copies, historical reflections, drawings, maps and tables. A handwritten annotation on a flyleaf of the first volume reads: "1884. Communicated by M. A. Benoit to the good Auguste Stoeber for his work on Moscherosch and returned by him some time before his death". The second manuscript is first and foremost a handwritten copy of the "Livre du vingtième jour" (the name given by Louis Benoit to the "album curiæ", or register in which the council of the barony of Fénétrange recorded the minutes of its meetings, because of the formula that is invariably repeated in it). This precious copy - the original having been lost since 1870 - includes original drawings and reproductions of the original object, as well as the sum of Louis Benoit's reflections and research on the original manuscript, including an interesting study of the paper marks used in the barony of Fénétrange. It is an essential document for studying the history of Fénétrange's municipal organization from 1583 to 1726. Exlibris Arthur and Louis Benoit.
