PIRON (Alexis) - OEuvres badines d'Alexis Piron. Amsterdam, - Lot 316

PIRON (Alexis) - OEuvres badines d'Alexis Piron. Amsterdam, s.e., 1820; small in-12, 166 pp. (some reversals of leaves, at the beginning), late 19th-century red half-maroquin with corners, ribbed spine, gilt head (top two corners a little dulled). Dutel A-781. Copy made from two editions: a second title page has been added (OEuvres badines d'Alexis Piron, précédées d'une notice sur sa vie; Amsterdam, chez les Marchands de nouveauté, 1831). The title page of the 1820 edition features an engraved vignette - a man in the street haranguing two women on their balcony: "Vous du haut du balcon, / Qui riez de ma misère, / S'il pleuvait du jus de couillon; / On vous verrait sous la gouttière". Dutel specifies that the edition was printed around 1820, but reports only one portrait and 4 engravings. Our copy includes a portrait by Piron, and 6 free engravings.
