Renaissance ARMOIRE with seven ringed columns - Lot 100
Renaissance ARMOIRE with seven ringed columns
Composed of three parts (base, body and entablature), it is inlaid with geometric motifs all along the front, and opens to two casements pierced by windows flanked by ringed columns resting on a base supporting the cornice. Under and over the window, the mantel is adorned with carvings of cherubs' heads amid foliage and mascarons in dark varnished wood, typical of the Baroque style. The pedestal features two drawers, while the center of the pediment features a cartouche indicating the date of the work (1618). The frame is made of spruce veneered with walnut, maple, plum and oak, mainly in the corrugated sections. Note the beautiful hardware and locks, as well as the forged, stamped interior hinges. The single key is integrated into the door.
Worked according to the principles of the masterpieces of the Strasbourg guild.
Provenance: former collection of the Alsatian artist Camille HIRTZ (1917-1987), then in a private collection in Strasbourg.
