"Elephant Fountain
circa 1890
Majolica wall fountain in fine earthenware coated with glazes colored with metallic oxides.
The piece bears the shape number "1912", which corresponds, in the list of fancy and decorative object numbers, to the
Sarreguemines faience factory, to an "Elephant fountain with turtle bowl 913".
Obtained by molding, it comprises three elements: a reservoir, in the shape of an elephant's head wearing a headdress with a frontal ornament decorated with flowers and bangs (this ornament, inspired by those observed on domesticated elephants in India, gives the piece an air of exoticism in the taste of the period) / a lid, decorated with lattice work, completes the elephant's headdress / a basin, in the shape of a shell, has two lobes.
Illegible markings on the underside of the basin.
Basin dimensions: H 13.5 x W 42 cm
Tank height: 50.5 cm
Lid height: 8.5 cm
