SARREGUEMINES
"Tête d'Alsacien" ashtray
1911-12
Majolica ashtray in fine earthenware coated with glazes colored with metallic oxides.
Bears the shape number "4399", which corresponds to the "Cendrier Tête d'Alsacien" (Alsatian head ashtray) in the Sarreguemines faïencerie's list of fancy and decorative object numbers.
Obtained by molding, it depicts a young man's head in light relief, wearing a hat and bow tie, and smoking a pipe. The pipe bowl features a head, perhaps that of Clémenceau. Two holes in the heel allow the piece to be hung.
Debossed mark under the base: "C 11A - SARREGUEMINES", shape number: "4399", paste number "227" and shaping marks "Z" and "D".
