Exceptional mahogany floor clock with a sector-style time di - Lot 13
Exceptional mahogany floor clock with a sector-style time display, signed Callier, a naval clockmaker, circa 1870. Silver-plated metal dial bearing the signature: “Callier, patented naval clockmaker of the state, gold medal.” Seconds indicated by a lower annular dial. Equation of time indicated by a segment on the main dial. Year indication via a rotating disc in a window on the main dial. Two main movements placed side by side, one above the other, secured to a large bracket by two threaded screws: - the first, lower movement, consisting of the main gear train with a Graham escapement and two winding drums for the two weights concealed in the case’s double back. - the second, upper movement, whose driving force is transmitted via a vertical gear train from the first movement, consists of the gear trains for the equation of time and the annual calendar. The equation cam is mounted on the annual calendar shaft. The quality of both movements is comparable to that of marine chronometers. Graham-type compensated balance wheel mounted on a knife-and-gimbal suspension, integral with the case. Mahogany case veneered over oak with a side-opening secret door. Restoration work required: - Case: missing mahogany veneer, case needs to be refinished, one back panel is missing, chips, etc. - Movement: needs cleaning - Dial: needs re-silvering. The slightly faded signature needs to be restored. Operational condition not guaranteed. Height: 212 cm Width: 59.5 cm Depth: 35.5 cm Bernard Callier (1820–1908), chronometer maker, successor to Winnerl in 1870, clockmaker to the observatory. He exhibited in 1867. Gold medal in 1880. Invented a new compensating balance for chronometers in 1879. (Tardy). Appraisal by Mr. Stéphane GIRARDOT
