Jean-Jacques HENNER (1829–1905) - Lot 65
Jean-Jacques HENNER (1829–1905) "Alsace. She Waits. Drawn Replica" Between 1872 and 1880 Charcoal, highlighted with white chalk and stump on paper, framed under glass Signed lower right With certificate of authenticity H 16 x W 7 cm A few foxing spots; removed from frame for appraisal purposes Appraisal by Ms. Victoire de Latour, editor of the artist’s Catalogue Raisonné This charcoal drawing with white chalk highlights and stump on paper, signed lower right, is indeed by Jean-Jacques Henner. It is a small replica of “L’Alsace. Elle attend,” which we can date to between 1871 and 1880. “L’Alsace. Elle attend” is known in two painted versions: the one at the Henner Museum (C. 107, catalog raisonné, 2008, oil on canvas, 60 x 30 cm, JJHP 1972-15) and the study at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Mulhouse (C. 108, catalog raisonné, 2008, oil on canvas, 32 x 16 cm, inv. 88.8.1), both dated 1871. Henner produced two drawings on tracing paper now held at the Henner Museum (JJHD 262 and JJHD 263), which are very different from this one and appear to have been created for one or more illustration projects, such as those he may have undertaken with Jules Claretie. The presence of the signature in lowercase letters suggests that Henner likely gave this sketch to a friend or relative, as he very rarely signed his drawings and kept them in his studio. The drawings did, in fact, appear on the market after his death.
