ANTIQUE FOLK ART - Lot 117
ANTIQUE FOLK ART Wooden, carved mill spout (kleiekotzer) depicting a grotesque figure with an open mouth, flanked by two facing lions; an illegible date is inscribed in a cartouche at the top center H 34 x W 43 x D 9 cm Signs of wear These carved wooden figures are not masks, but elements attached to the flour hopper of old mills known as “bag mills.” They framed the opening through which the bran, separated from the flour, flowed out. Through their gaping mouths, they “spewed” out the bran while protecting the mill’s contents. Their symbolic function was to scare away malevolent spirits that might contaminate the flour, which in the past was a carrier of ergot, a toxic fungus responsible for “mal des Ardents,” a condition treated by the Antonite monks of Issenheim (Haut-Rhin).
