The pommel features a beak-shaped tip engraved at its apex; the guard has a long tail extending into acanthus leaves, with a separate finial at the top that now secures the blade tang; extending from the base of the floret is the guard branch, decorated on its outer surface with acanthus leaves and floral motifs along its length; the quillon of the guard branch is scroll-shaped. The guard’s lugs are overlaid with the coat of arms of the Reichsland, the coat of arms of Alsace-Lorraine, then under German occupation, bearing in the center a shield divided between the traditional coats of arms of Upper and Lower Alsace on one side and the coat of arms of Lorraine on the other, surmounted by a firefighter’s helmet. The ferrule is embellished with a series of scrollwork leaves. The wooden tang is covered in shagreen, featuring twelve flutes highlighted by a triple filigree pattern, twisted at its center. Slightly curved blade made of nickel-plated steel, with a single cutting edge and a blood groove, unsigned. Nickel-plated steel scabbard with two ring-style fasteners featuring movable rings. Officer’s wrist strap, black silk cord, tassel made of cannetille thread. Germany - France. Second Reich Total length of the weapon: 96 cm Blade length: 80 cm Some signs of wear Note: It should be noted that the Reichsland weapons, defined by an imperial decree of December 29, 1891, remained in use even after Germany’s defeat in 1918.
