French school circa 1880 in the manner of Antoine-Louis BARY - Lot 208
French school circa 1880 in the manner of Antoine-Louis BARYE (1795-1875) "Amazon in Henri II costume Bronze proof with brown patina Signed "BARYE" on the terrace. H 33 x W 39 x D 11 cm Expertise Sculpture et Collection Related works : -Antoine-Louis Barye, Cavalière en tenue Renaissance, c.1840, bronze, signed "BARYE" on the terrace, bears the inscriptions "2 MIROU" and "356" painted under the base and a label "710" at the bottom of the base, H. 39.4 x L. 36.5 x W. 13 cm, Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, inv. 1989.151 -Antoine-Louis Barye, Woman on horseback, bronze, H.38,7 x L. 34,3 x W.13 cm, New-York, Brooklyn Museum, inv. 10.109 The model on which this equestrian statuette is based is part of a distinct body of work by Barye. The animal sculptor modeled and then produced a number of equestrian statuettes in bronze, often in a historicist or orientalist vein. The 1830 Amazon in costume is therefore a special case in terms of its iconography. The example we are presenting shows significant variations from the one listed in the artist's catalog raisonné. While the general composition is the same, the rider is different, wearing a "Henri II" costume, and the horse's harness and tail also show significant variations. This pastiche is not a composition by Barye, but by a late 19th-century follower. However, the model mistakenly appeared in various "Barye" auctions as early as the late 1870s, and the error persists to this day, as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Brooklyn Museum present similar examples as authentic Barye.
