Paul RESCH (XX-XXI), woodcarver, Dettwiller - Lot 133
Paul RESCH (XX-XXI), woodcarver, Dettwiller "Grotesque Wooden mill disgorger (kleiekotzer) featuring a man's face with its mouth open. H 60 x W 40 x D 12 cm Worn These carved wooden figures are not masks, but elements attached to the flour caisson of old "sack" mills. They framed the opening through which the bran, separated from the flour, flowed. With their gaping mouths, they "vomited out" the bran while protecting the contents of the mill. Their symbolic function was to frighten off malevolent spirits likely to contaminate the flour, which was once a vector for ergot, a toxic fungus responsible for "mal des Ardents", a disease treated by the Antonite monks of Issenheim (Haut-Rhin).
